Maharashtra Cracks Down on Illegal Fishing with 10 New Surveillance Drones Along Coast

Maharashtra’s coastal surveillance framework is set to be strengthened with the planned addition of more unmanned aerial systems, as efforts are intensified to curb illegal fishing and improve maritime enforcement.

A directive has been issued by Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane for the procurement of 10 additional drones to enhance monitoring along the state’s coastline. The decision has been taken as part of a broader push to reinforce coastal security and ensure compliance with fisheries regulations.

The instruction was given during a high-level review meeting focused on the implementation of the Maharashtra Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1981, along with discussions on the procurement of patrol boats and surveillance equipment. Senior officials from the fisheries and administrative departments were present during the meeting, where multiple enforcement and infrastructure measures were assessed.

Drone-based monitoring is already being utilized by the department, with nine drones currently deployed for coastal surveillance. The expansion of this aerial fleet is expected to improve both coverage and operational precision. Officials have been directed to prepare and accelerate the procurement process to enable faster deployment of the additional systems.

Alongside drone expansion, the acquisition of modern patrol boats has also been prioritised to strengthen on-ground enforcement capabilities at sea. The move is aimed at ensuring better coordination between aerial and marine monitoring systems.

In a parallel measure, stricter action has been ordered against the use of unauthorised LED lights in fishing operations. Such practices, which are prohibited under existing regulations, are set to be targeted through large-scale and surprise inspection drives. Enforcement accountability is also expected to be reinforced, with departmental officers being held responsible for ensuring compliance.

The review further covered key administrative and security initiatives, including recruitment under the revised departmental structure and the deployment of security personnel at 91 identified sensitive coastal landing points. These deployments are being facilitated through the Maharashtra State Security Corporation to enhance vigilance across critical locations.

Progress under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana was also assessed during the meeting, with particular attention given to the appointment of Sagar Mitras tasked with supporting coastal communities and improving fisheries management practices.

With these combined measures, a more robust framework for coastal monitoring, regulatory enforcement, and sustainable fishing practices is being pursued across Maharashtra’s maritime sector.
