Drone Surveillance Uncovers Illegal Coal Mine in East Jaintia Hills

On Thursday, authorities in East Jaintia Hills uncovered an active illegal coal mining operation in Umthe, located under the Umpleng Police Outpost. The discovery was made following targeted intelligence gathered through drone surveillance.
A raid was initiated on February 26 based on aerial intelligence, revealing the ongoing illegal mining activities in violation of environmental and mining regulations. Nine workers were discovered at the site, actively engaged in the extraction process.
The operation was carried out in full compliance with the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) ban on unlawful coal mining and transportation, as well as the directives from the High Court of Meghalaya, which emphasize the need for robust enforcement against illegal mining activities in the state.
During the operation, around 55 metric tonnes of coal, extracted without legal authorization, were seized, with the presence of an Executive Magistrate ensuring that the legal processes were followed.
All nine workers were detained, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed. The investigation is currently ongoing to identify the individuals behind the financing and operation of the illegal mine.
Authorities have reaffirmed their stance on zero tolerance toward illegal mining, assuring that strict enforcement actions will continue in East Jaintia Hills to target vulnerable mining areas.
