Homegrown Drone Technology Is Now a Strategic Necessity, Says CDS

During a speech at the Manekshaw Centre on Wednesday, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan emphasised the strategic need for India to become self-reliant in drone and counter-drone technologies. His comments were made as worries about the role of UAVs in contemporary warfare grew, as evidenced by recent international conflicts and India’s own Operation Sindoor.

Regardless of size or cost, drones have demonstrated the ability to change the tactical balance in warfare, according to Gen Chauhan, who was speaking at a workshop on the indigenization of critical UAV and C-UAS components that are currently sourced from foreign manufacturers.

According to the CDS, Pakistan used loitering munitions and unarmed drones during Operation Sindoor, but these aerial threats were eliminated by a mix of kinetic and non-kinetic responses. Important intelligence was obtained from the intact recovery of some enemy drones.

The operation, according to Gen. Chauhan, reaffirmed the pressing need for domestically produced UAV and C-UAS platforms that are especially designed to fit Indian terrain and mission needs. Citing weaknesses in supply chain resilience, logistical sustainability, and operational readiness, he cautioned against relying too heavily on imported niche technologies.

The Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS) and the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) hosted the gathering, which included representatives from the private sector, military leaders, scientists, and policymakers. Building a roadmap to lessen dependency on foreign businesses and increase domestic drone manufacturing was the main topic of discussion.

India’s strategic autonomy will be shaped more and more by its capacity to create and implement its own drone and anti-drone systems as warfare becomes a more technologically advanced, non-contact field.
