India Greenlights ₹30,000 Crore Deal for Indigenous MALE Drones

MALE Drones

In a significant stride towards modernizing its defense capabilities, the Indian Ministry of Defence, under the leadership of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved a monumental contract valued at ₹30,000 crore for the procurement of 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones—all developed and manufactured domestically

What Makes These Drones Stand Out?

These MALE drones are engineered to operate at heights between 10,000 to 30,000 feet, with an endurance of 24 hours or more, enabling persistent surveillance, reconnaissance, precision strikes, and electronic warfare capabilities. Their advanced functionality includes intelligence gathering, real-time targeting, and the potential integration of air-to-ground missiles and laser-guided munitions.

Fostering Indigenous Manufacturing

A strategic component of the deal emphasizes self-reliance—each of the two selected Indian firms is required to locally produce critical components such as aerostructures, engines (to be assembled and tested in India), electro-optical payloads, and satellite communication systems.

A Split Contract for Scale and Resilience

To ensure flexibility and scalability, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has mandated a 64:36 split between the two lowest bidders. The lead contractor will secure the larger share of the order. This dual-source strategy facilitates rapid production ramp-up when needed and strengthens the overall UAV manufacturing ecosystem in India.
