India to Install Anti-Drone Systems at Major Airports After Rising Security Threats

As major airports throughout the nation get ready to install anti-drone systems that can identify and neutralize rogue unmanned aircraft, India is taking steps to drastically tighten aviation security. The decision was made in response to growing military tensions around the world and lessons learned from Operation Sindoor, in which drones emerged as one of the most potent weapons in contemporary warfare.

This marks the first time that civil aviation airports in India will be equipped with such advanced counter-drone technology. Several high-level meetings have already been held, and plans are in motion to finalize the system specifications, according to Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials.

A committee established under the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), comprising representatives from DGCA, CISF, and other important aviation and security stakeholders, is leading the initiative. Purchasing and installation will start as soon as technical parameters are completely established.

High-sensitivity airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Srinagar, Jammu, and those close to international borders will be given priority during the rollout, according to officials. The systems will be expanded to more Indian airports following the initial phase.

According to a senior officer, models used in international airports are also being assessed to see which ones work best in India. Once the technical framework is approved, airport operators will be given specific deadlines to install systems that satisfy the required standards.

Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025 and the ensuing escalation between India and Pakistan, where the strategic use of drones became widely apparent, the project’s urgency increased. Indian defense units frequently intercepted and neutralized Pakistani drones that were seen entering Indian airspace.

These incidents, according to officials, demonstrated the increasing threat posed by rogue UAVs, especially in the vicinity of international borders and airports with heavy civilian traffic. It is anticipated that the future anti-drone systems will enhance India’s aviation security architecture by offering prompt detection, tracking, and neutralization capabilities.
