Pune Forest Department Considers Drone Support to Track Elusive Leopard at AFS

In order to track down the leopard that was seen at the airport last week, the state forest department has stated that it is prepared to use drones inside the Air Force Station in Pune. Drone flights would only be permitted during specific time windows and would need special permission from the Indian Air Force, according to officials. The department is attempting to ascertain whether the leopard has sought refuge on the IAF campus once more while waiting for clearance.

The Air Force affirmed that all operational and safety procedures are still in place. A senior officer said the station continues to operate without any disruption and that civil and military flying activities are unaffected. To guarantee total safety on the property, patrolling has been stepped up.

At suspected entry points, forest officials have set up two trap cages that mimic stormwater drain openings. The IAF campus has a vast network of subterranean stormwater drains, according to Ashish Thakare, conservator of forests (territorial). Although leopards do not naturally inhabit such areas, it appears that the animal uses the tunnels to conceal itself and defend itself. Officials stated that while some drains have been blocked, it is not feasible to seal the entire network.

Although using tranquilizer darts is still an option, experts say it would be very difficult in an open, uncovered area like the airport’s airside. The animal has not yet been captured by any of the five trap cameras that have been set up in various locations. In order to ascertain whether the leopard is still on the move or has made a permanent home on campus, teams are also looking for traces of its prey.

A small section of the perimeter wall without barbed fencing is also suspected, according to Range Forest Officer Suresh Varak. Officials suspect the leopard may be using this corner frequently because it could easily scale the wall and enter.
