A unique “Drone Workshop” set up by the Battle Axe Division during Exercise Trishul under the Southern Command near the India-Pakistan border in Jaisalmer has allowed the Indian Army to begin advanced drone operation training for soldiers in a significant step towards modern warfare and self-reliance.

Drone construction, repair, and operational skills, such as First Person View (FPV) piloting, munition dropping, and surveillance operations, are the main topics of the workshop. The Army’s goal that “Every Soldier Will Have the Vision of an Eagle” is reflected in it. The program represents the Army’s first extensive use of drones in Exercise Trishul, where unmanned aerial systems demonstrated their accuracy, speed, and battlefield potential over two days by successfully dropping bombs and destroying mock enemy positions.

The initiative supports the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat, which is to improve domestic defense capabilities. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) can now be designed and mass-produced in-house by the Southern Command, greatly lowering dependency on outside vendors and advancing India’s defense independence.

The Southern Command has also set up Drone Hubs to develop cutting-edge systems for electronic warfare, precision strikes, and surveillance by working with India’s MSMEs and utilizing the technical know-how of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME). By acting as centers for innovation and training, these hubs guarantee ongoing improvements and tactical preparedness for demands on the battlefield in the future.

During Exercise Trishul, the drones’ operational reliability across a variety of terrains was highlighted by their high endurance, accuracy, and adaptability in harsh desert conditions. The Army’s increasing focus on incorporating unmanned systems into its combat and reconnaissance frameworks is demonstrated by the trials’ success.

As a result of these advancements, the Southern Command is effectively combining innovation, technology, and tactical excellence to create a future-ready, tech-enabled Army that can use domestic drone power and in-house solutions to meet contemporary battlefield challenges.
