BSF Launches School of Drone Warfare to Train ‘Drone Commandos’

By establishing the School of Drone Warfare at its officers’ training academy in Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) has made significant progress toward modernizing its combat capabilities. The facility will prepare border troops for the increasingly important role of unmanned aerial platforms in contemporary warfare by training them as drone commandos and drone warriors.
Five specialized courses on UAV operations, anti-drone warfare, surveillance, intelligence collection, and payload integration will be offered by the new institution. To ensure they are prepared for both defensive and offensive missions, trainees will be outfitted to handle night operations, radio frequency jammers, kinetic interceptors, and AI-enabled tools. To mimic actual combat situations, simulators and specific flying areas have also been developed.
The action comes after learnings from Operation Sindoor, India’s reaction to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which showed how effective drones can be in contemporary warfare. BSF leadership emphasized how drones have proven essential in surveillance, precision strikes, and strategic dominance in international conflicts, especially the Russia-Ukraine war.
The school intends to equip BSF units to combat hostile drones, which are commonly used to smuggle ammunition, weapons, and drugs across the India-Pakistan border, in addition to preparing them for frontline combat. As a specialized force multiplier, the drone squadron being raised by the BSF will improve border security along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border and the 2,290-km India-Pakistan border. Drones manufactured in China frequently enter Indian territory illegally from Pakistan.
One of the most distinctive developments in contemporary warfare is the emergence of drone warfare. Drones have shown themselves to be force multipliers that can function in hazardous environments, from direct combat to reconnaissance and surveillance. Since unmanned systems are now a common sight in both state and non-state conflicts, international militaries are investing more in drone technology for both offensive missions and counter-drone operations.
The addition of drone commandos to the BSF is a big step for India in fortifying its border security framework. Specialized units trained in both offensive and defensive drone operations are needed to counter the threats posed by adversaries who regularly use drones for surveillance, drug smuggling, and weapon smuggling. The proactive approach demonstrated by the founding of the School of Drone Warfare guarantees that Indian forces are equipped to handle both conventional and asymmetric challenges.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that the application of AI and ML in drone operations will revolutionize national defense and border management. Real-time threat identification, terrain data analysis, and tactical decision support are all possible with AI-enabled smart drones. The BSF is setting itself up to not only protect India’s expansive borders but also serve as a model for contemporary security forces around the world by fusing traditional border guarding with state-of-the-art technology.
