Namo Drone Didi Scheme Boosts Rural Women Empowerment with Agri-Drone Adoption

The government’sNamo Drone Didiprogram is a big step toward empowering women in rural areas. It aims to bring new income opportunities to women-led groups by using modern drone technology in farming.

The plan has been approved as a Central Sector initiative, and it will get ₹1,261 crore from 2023–24 to 2025–26. The main goal is to give certain Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) drones so they can rent them out to farmers for tasks like spraying pesticides and fertilizers.

The program is giving a lot of money to groups that are taking part. Central assistance pays for up to 80% of the cost of buying a drone, but it can’t be more than ₹8 lakh per unit. Cluster Level Federations can get the rest of the money through loans from the Agriculture Infrastructure Financing program, which comes with an interest subsidy.

The scheme’s drone packages are all meant to be fully functional. It comes with a spraying system, extra batteries, propellers, charging equipment, and other important accessories. Beneficiaries also get structured training programs that teach them how to fly drones, keep them in good shape, and handle them safely. The DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organizations do the training, which makes sure that it meets aviation standards.

Lead fertilizer companies sent out 500 drones to different states between 2023 and 2024. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana had more people participating, but many other states also helped spread the technology across the country.

The Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Centre in Bengaluru did an evaluation and found that the initiative had good results. Women SHGs used to mostly do traditional farming work, but now they are branching out into technology-based services. Drones have helped make farm work more efficient, opened up new ways to make money, and increased income potential.

The project is part of a bigger effort to combine digital farming with empowering people at the grassroots level. It puts rural women in charge of using new farming technologies.
