Andhra Pradesh Unveils Massive Drone City Vision at Puttaparthi Event

Andhra Pradesh is making a strong push to position itself as the hub of Indiaโ€™s booming drone economy with the state getting ready to display its growing โ€œDrone Cityโ€ ecosystem at a big aerospace and defence event in Puttaparthi on May 15.

The event also includes the laying of the foundation stone for infrastructure associated with Indiaโ€™s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. But the bigger signal for the UAV industry is Andhra Pradeshโ€™s effort to build a full-scale ecosystem around drones, autonomous systems, robotics and aerospace manufacturing.

The state government said the exhibition would involve companies engaged in AI-enabled drones, UAV manufacturing, autonomous systems, surveillance technologies, aerospace components and drone-focused R&D. Indiaโ€™s drone startups and industry players see the event as another sign that states are now competing to attract next-generation unmanned systems manufacturing and innovation.

The Puttaparthi event is expected to draw policymakers, defence stakeholders, investors and technology companies with support from the Andhra Pradesh government and the Centre. The presence of national leadership including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is being seen by industry watchers as a strong endorsement of the countryโ€™s expanding drone and autonomous systems industry.

The pitch of Andhra Pradesh is crucial for Indiaโ€™s UAV ecosystem not only in terms of drone operations but also the depth of manufacturing. The state is positioning itself as a hub for hardware manufacturing, component manufacturing, AI integration, aerospace engineering and drone research โ€“ all sectors in which India is looking to reduce dependence on imports and develop indigenous capabilities.

Industry executives say the timing is tactical. The drone market in India has taken off in recent years, driven by policy reform, production-linked incentives, rising defence demand and increasing commercial adoption across agriculture, infrastructure, logistics and surveillance. The next wave of drone investment is expected to flow to states that can offer industrial land, testing infrastructure, skilled talent and supply-chain support.

Andhra Pradesh believes it has several advantages in that race, including industrial infrastructure, port connectivity, manufacturing corridors and a growing technology workforce. The state government has also been investor friendly for high-technology industries that could help attract both domestic UAV start-ups and global aerospace suppliers looking for Indian manufacturing partners.

The focus on autonomous systems and AI-enabled drones is especially notable. Indian drone companies are now progressing from basic quadcopters to advanced surveillance systems, swarm technologies, autonomous navigation and defence-grade UAV platforms. State-backed ecosystems for them could help accelerate prototyping, testing and commercial scaling for these firms.

The broader AMCA and Aatmanirbhar Bharat context gives the event a strategic heft, but for the drone industry, the larger story is the emergence of a state-level manufacturing and innovation hub on the back of unmanned technologies.

Andhra Pradeshโ€™s recent push indicates that the race to establish Indiaโ€™s drone capital is moving into a new chapter โ€” one thatโ€™s not just about flying drones, but constructing the whole unmanned systems economy from scratch, for drone founders, aerospace engineers, component suppliers and investors.
