India’s New Kamikaze Drone Can Strike Targets With High Accuracy
In a bid to enhance the Army’s precision strike and battlefield capabilities, the Indian Army has procured two indigenously developed combat systems under the Emergency Procurement (EP-6) programme, namely the UAV-Launched Precision Guided Munition (ULPGM) and the AGNIKAA VTOL-1 FPV Kamikaze Drone.
The systems were formally handed over in Hyderabad in presence of officials from the Army’s Western Command after successful high altitude trials, electronic warfare (EW) evaluations and precision guided munition firing tests.
The ULPGM is being developed jointly by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Adani Defence & Aerospace and is claimed to be the first indigenous loitering munition of its kind in India. The system is precision engagement-oriented, with an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker and the capability to operate in GPS-denied and electronically jammed environments.
Details released say the ULPGM has a UAV range of 20 km and strike range of 2.5 km. It carries a 2 kg warhead and achieves an accuracy of one metre circular error probable (CEP). The munition can be employed in day and night missions in all weather conditions.
The AGNIKAA VTOL-1 FPV Kamikaze Drone, an anti-personnel system for deployment in urban as well as open battlefield conditions, was also inducted into the Indian Army. The drone is designed for quick and accurate strikes on enemy targets and can operate within a radius of 5 km.
Both the systems of combat are entirely designed and built in India, demonstrating the country’s thrust for defence self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The induction of these under the EP-6 framework reiterates the Army’s focus on fast-tracking the acquisition of indigenous technologies that meet the requirements of the modern battlefield, including precision engagement and operations in contested electronic warfare environments.
