Drone Technology Explored for Strengthening Healthcare in Remote Regions of Arunachal Pradesh
Biyuram Wahge, the minister of health and family welfare for Arunachal Pradesh, attended the 6th International Drone Expo 2025 in Delhi to evaluate how drone technology might improve access to healthcare in the state’s rural and hilly areas.
The minister engaged with exhibitors demonstrating drone-based medical logistics while accompanied by senior Health Department officials. The importance of unmanned aerial systems in facilitating the prompt delivery of medications, vaccines, and diagnostic samples was emphasized, especially in emergency scenarios where prompt action is essential to saving lives.
The visit demonstrated the growing importance of drones in bridging geographic divides in healthcare delivery. Real-world drone applications in challenging terrain, where traditional modes of transportation frequently experience major delays or become completely unusable, received special attention.
In order to support healthcare logistics in remote areas, two drone service providers are currently active in Arunachal Pradesh. Early adoption of such innovations has already been shown by the state. In conjunction with the World Economic Forum, a pilot project under the “Medicine from the Sky” initiative was introduced on August 15, 2022, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav festivities. This program established a standard for technology-enabled healthcare in Northeast India when a drone successfully transported necessary medications from Seppa to Chayang Tajo in East Kameng District.
In order to guarantee continuous medical supplies throughout the state, the Health Department is currently attempting to scale such initiatives. Arunachal Pradesh is anticipated to become a national model for easily accessible and effective healthcare in underserved and mountainous areas with a greater emphasis on digital health infrastructure and ongoing investments in drone-supported logistics.
