Exercise Drone Prahar Highlights Indian Army’s Modernization Push

The Indian Army’s Spear Corps recently held Exercise Drone Prahar, a high-level military exercise aimed at incorporating drone technology into tactical and operational combat layers, marking a major advancement in battlefield capabilities. General Officer Commanding Spear Corps Lieutenant General Abhijeet S. Pendharkar, AVSM, YSM, oversaw the exercise.
The exercise was intended to assess the use of drones for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) tasks and was conducted under realistic operational circumstances. Precision targeting systems and real-time sensor-to-shooter links were tested to improve mission effectiveness and battlefield decision-making.
Situational awareness was greatly enhanced and tactical commanders’ operational reach was increased through the use of layered surveillance techniques. Secure protocols were used to maintain communication between units and services, and effective coordination and deconfliction measures for airspace were put in place.
Drone integration into infantry and supporting arms was confirmed as a crucial enabler, supporting the Indian Army’s goal of creating a technologically advanced, flexible force that can respond to changing circumstances.
The Army’s ongoing focus on implementing cutting-edge technologies is part of a larger initiative to improve combat readiness via innovation and digital warfare capabilities.
In the meantime, the Make in India campaign is accelerating efforts to improve surveillance capabilities across the services. According to defense sources, a tri-service proposal worth about ₹20,000 crore is presently being considered. The Indian Air Force is in charge of the project, which intends to purchase 87 Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) drones to patrol land and sea borders, including vital areas near the borders with China and Pakistan.
The project requires over 60% domestic content to guarantee self-reliance and indigenous development. Major Indian defense manufacturers are anticipated to participate, and a high-level defense ministry meeting is planned to discuss procurement.
The Indian defense ecosystem is progressively changing to meet the country’s strategic priorities and technological ambitions thanks to programs like Drone Prahar and the impending purchase of MALE drones.
