FedEx & IIT Madras Complete India’s First Intra-City Drone Delivery Trial in Bengaluru

India’s first intra-city drone delivery flight trials have been successful in Bengaluru, which is a big step forward for logistics innovation. The project was done with help from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), as part of the research work of the FedEx SMART Centre.

The trials were meant to test how well and how possible drone-based logistics would work in a city. A mid-mile aerial delivery route was tested between Electronic City Phase II and places near Kempegowda International Airport. Using aerial corridors, a normal 60-minute drive over 53 kilometers was greatly improved. The drone-based route cut the distance traveled to about 39–42 kilometers and made it possible to make deliveries in almost 21 minutes.

During the tests, operations took place at a height of about 120 meters. To make sure safe and dependable performance, a number of safety features were added. These included systems for ending autonomous flights, the ability to return home, and lights that prevent collisions. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation was in charge of the whole operation, which made sure that all rules were followed.

The trials are part of a bigger plan to make better, more technology-based supply chain systems. The FedEx SMART Centre has been doing research on things like optimizing air cargo and creating long-lasting logistics ecosystems. The use of drones in logistics systems has been recognized as a major step forward in making supply chains more efficient and ready for the future.

Aerial robotics in logistics could change delivery models a lot, especially in cities with a lot of people where traffic jams often cause delays. The successful demonstration of shorter transit times shows that drone logistics could make operations more efficient and reliable.

The Indian logistics industry is likely to see big changes in the long run because of these tests. Faster delivery times, less reliance on road infrastructure, and better connections between major industrial and transportation hubs are all likely to be important factors in the future of logistics networks. The tests have also shown how new technologies can be easily added to current supply chain systems.

Amber Wings, a deep-tech start-up that was incubated at IIT Madras, worked with us on the project. The partnership brought together academic research, industry knowledge, and new ideas from start-ups to make the trials a success.

These trials were successful, and now there is a solid base for expanding drone-based logistics solutions in India. As stakeholders keep looking into how drones could change urban and regional delivery systems, more progress and large-scale implementations are likely to happen.
