New Era of Farming: Women Drone Pilots Drive Climate-Resilient Agriculture

Under its ProRISE initiative, Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR) and the Walmart Foundation have launched a cutting-edge, technology-based program that trains rural women to become certified drone pilots. By providing women with contemporary precision-agriculture skills and creating new opportunities for employment in rural areas, the initiative aims to strengthen climate-resilient farming.

WOTR has developed a model whereby Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPOs) purchase drones for group use in order to foster long-term community ownership. Women from several villages are getting practical training in using drones for spraying, crop monitoring, and other agricultural purposes with support from the Walmart Foundation. Significant manual labor reductions, increased pest control effectiveness, and a decreased reliance on chemical inputs are all indicated by preliminary field observations.

Currently operating in the districts of Jalna and Dharashiv in Maharashtra, the program has already helped 2,100 farmers, and in the upcoming month, participation is expected to increase by almost a third. WOTR intends to expand the program throughout its western Indian operational regions before progressively expanding it across the country.

The ProRISE project is intended to empower rural women by providing them with cutting-edge tools and technical capabilities, according to Sandip Jadhav, Director of WOTR. With the help of partners like the Walmart Foundation, the project allows women to work as drone pilots, which not only increases their earning potential but also aids farmers in switching to more productive and environmentally friendly farming methods.

The Foundation’s involvement, according to Nishant Gupta, who oversees social and environmental impact initiatives at Walmart.org, is motivated by its conviction that innovation and inclusivity can lead to significant change. The organization hopes to boost community resilience and promote the use of sustainable farming methods by funding the training of female drone pilots.

The initiative, according to WOTR, is a great illustration of how technology-led skill development can support climate-smart agriculture, improve rural communities, and increase the role of women in creating a more resilient future.
