All Indian Soldiers to Be Drone-Trained by 2027: Army Training Command Unveils New Initiative

A comprehensive plan to train all Indian soldiers in drone operations by 2027 has been announced by the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), marking a significant step in modernizing the Indian Army’s combat readiness.
General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of ARTRAC Lieutenant General Devendra Sharma made the announcement Thursday at the Danfe Auditorium in Shimla during the ARTRAC Investiture Ceremony 2025. Senior officers, honorees, and notable visitors attended the event.
Lt Gen Sharma, who spoke at the ceremony, stated that the decision was made in light of important lessons learned from Operation Sindoor, in which the Indian Army proved to have remarkable drone capabilities in real-world situations. “Our forces demonstrated exceptional proficiency in Operation Sindoor, especially in the deployment of drones,” he said. “We want to build on that experience by making sure that all Indian Army soldiers receive drone usage training by 2027. Drones will serve as the modern soldier’s “third arm.”
In keeping with the Army’s larger transformation objectives, he also underlined the command’s dedication to building a force that is future-ready, gender-inclusive, and technologically empowered.
The occasion also honoured excellence in a number of fields. Five military establishments received the GOC-in-C Unit Citation for their outstanding contributions to training innovation, digital transformation, financial management, and the general improvement of military readiness during the 2023–2024 training year.
After the event, Lt Gen Sharma spoke to the media and reaffirmed ARTRAC’s goal of incorporating state-of-the-art technologies into soldier training to increase the agility and independence of India’s defense forces in future battle situations.
