Yogi Govt. Leverages AI and Drone Technology to Monitor Illegal Mining in UP

Yogi govt leverages ai and drone technology to monitor illegal mining in up

The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has implemented a number of cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), drone technology, and satellite-based monitoring systems, in a major effort to stop illicit mining and unapproved mineral transportation.

The state government has blacklisted more than 21,477 vehicles involved in illegal mineral transportation as part of this vigorous crackdown. The government has implemented a multi-layered surveillance system to increase transparency and reduce the power of mining mafias, displaying previously unheard-of technological vigilance.

The state has placed 57 AI and IoT-enabled check gates in strategic locations to monitor vehicle movement in mining zones. Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) technology is used at these automated checkpoints, which were set up with the Transport Department’s assistance, to identify overloaded cars in real time.

Additionally, the Directorate of Geology and Mining has incorporated satellite technology into its operations. Illegal mining sites and unexplored mineral zones are being evaluated using tools like Google Earth, Arc-GIS, and LISS-IV satellite imagery.

The PGRS lab, the department’s remote sensing lab, is actively creating geological maps and keeping an eye on areas covered by authorized mining leases. In particular, drone technology is significantly improving enforcement and accuracy. Volumetric analysis can now accurately estimate the extent of excavation thanks to the use of drones to measure the length, width, and depth of mining pits.

Drones are also being used to clearly mark mineable areas and monitor the amount of minerals stored for improved lease management. The government has greatly increased transparency in the industry, decreased instances of illicit activity, and strengthened regulatory oversight through frequent tech-based inspections.
