Indian Railways Deploys Drone Technology for Coach Cleaning at Kamakhya Station

Indian Railways has implemented a drone-powered cleaning system at Kamakhya Railway Station in Assam, marking a significant advancement in technological modernization. Launched in April, the project represents a major breakthrough in high-tech maintenance with the goal of enhancing railway operations’ safety and cleaning effectiveness.

The cutting-edge system cleans train coaches and station infrastructure using drones fitted with high-pressure water jets, especially in places that are hazardous or challenging to clean by hand. This technology is now being used to sanitize elevated surfaces, including coach rooftops, platform covers, and overhead structures, greatly lowering labor intensity and human risk.

Up until now, these cleaning jobs were done by hand, frequently requiring employees to enter difficult-to-reach places, which could be dangerous. By automating the procedure, the drone system allays these worries by more accurately and thoroughly misting surfaces with water and disinfectants. The Railways Ministry claims that this strategy has reduced the need for manual labor, enhanced hygiene, and sped up operations.

Feedback on the project has been favorable for a number of quarters. A video of the drone system in operation was posted by BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, who commended Indian Railways for embracing innovation and emphasized the importance of cutting-edge machinery for the advancement of the country.

Although drones have been used by Indian Railways since 2018 for safety surveillance, infrastructure inspections, and real-time monitoring, this is the first time they have been used extensively in maintenance and sanitation.

Railway officials are thinking about implementing the drone cleaning system across the country after the Kamakhya pilot project proved successful. It is anticipated that the action will advance Indian Railways’ objective of improving workplace standards, passenger safety, and operational efficiency through intelligent technology integration.
