After Deadly Gas Leak, Coal India Deploys Drones to Scan Jharkhand’s Underground Mines

Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has sent a team of experts to do a drone-based survey in areas of Jharkhand that have been affected by gas emissions from underground mines run by Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).

The survey is being carried out across localities including Rajput Basti, Masjid Muhalla and Area No. 5 under the Putki-Balihari colliery, where gas leakage incidents were reported earlier. After finding dangerous emissions, officials decided to move almost 1,000 people from the affected areas as a safety measure.

The drone survey follows a serious incident earlier this month in Kenduadih Basti, where a woman allegedly lost her life and at least 12 people fell ill due to carbon monoxide exposure from underground mine emissions. The latest exercise aims to identify the precise causes of gas seepage, locate leakage points and recommend corrective measures to prevent further incidents.

The CMPDIL team is conducting aerial mapping and data collection within a 400-metre radius of the impacted localities. The information collected by drones will be sent to the institute’s headquarters in Ranchi, where experts will look at the results to find out where the emissions are coming from and come up with technical ways to stop them. It should take about 15 to 20 days to finish the analysis.

The survey will not only find areas where gas is leaking, but it will also help figure out how many homes and people are actually affected by the emissions. Officials acknowledged that earlier assessments conducted over the past 11 days had not fully captured the scale of impact on local populations.

Along with the drone-based assessment, CMPDIL teams are also using thermal guns to check the surface temperatures in the areas that were affected. Early observations show that the area’s temperatures are within the normal range for winter, which means that there is no unusual buildup of heat on the surface right now.

CMPDIL, which is based in Ranchi, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited. It is in charge of planning and giving advice on coal mining operations across the country. The findings of the ongoing survey are expected to play a key role in shaping mitigation strategies and ensuring safety for communities living near active and abandoned mining zones.
