Punjab Deploys ‘Baaj Akh’ Anti-Drone System to Combat Cross-Border Smuggling

In an effort to combat the escalating threat of cross-border drug and weapon smuggling, Punjab has become the first state in India to install an advanced Anti-Drone System (ADS) along the international border.

AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann formally introduced the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL)-developed “Baaj Akh” Anti-Drone System. Three units have already been installed by the state government, and six more are scheduled to be deployed in the next few days.

These systems, which will cost ₹51.4 crore, will cover the whole 532-km section of Punjab’s border with Pakistan and act as a “Second Line of Defence” behind the Border Security Force (BSF). This is the first instance of such technology being independently used for border security by an Indian state police force.

The ADS can identify and destroy drones in real time, stopping them from delivering illegal weapons, ammunition, and drugs. Authorities can track down operators involved in cross-border smuggling thanks to its ability to locate the drone’s control station.

In 2024, 283 drones carrying weapons and drugs were apprehended by Punjab Police, according to official statistics. Drones have already been intercepted 137 times in 2025 alone. The new system will be placed strategically in high-risk areas where drone activity is most common.

Authorities stress that the state’s zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking includes this deployment. The “Baaj Akh” system, which can instantly jam and destroy hostile drones, is anticipated to greatly bolster Punjab’s counter-smuggling efforts.
